Trends with Benefits: Diversity in Hospitality

In today’s workforce, the demographic of employees is becoming much more diverse. People from all different cultures, ages, economic status and gender are coming together to create successful businesses.  It is important for creativity and idea generation to have a diverse workforce.

At the Summit, not only are we a Certified Women’s Owned business but we also have a very diverse staff.  The diversity of our team not only brings us together but we learn a lot from each other’s differences. Our owner Louise Silberman states that in the business of service, you need to be as diverse and cultural as the clients you are servicing.

Employees understand now more than ever the importance of having colleagues who represent different cultures and generations for the many strengths and talents this brings to the table. People are working in teams and are learning and growing from their colleagues. 

Every year the list of the top diverse corporations comes out and the winners are posting it all over their media outlets and sharing it with their clients. Business reputations flourish when companies demonstrate their commitment to diversity through aggressive outreach and recruiting efforts. An organization known for its ethics, fair employment practices and appreciation for diverse talent is better able to attract a wider pool of qualified applicants. It is very hard to keep employees for longer than a few years so it is important to not only attract good employees but also to keep them.

Having a diverse workforce is very important but equally important is your willingness to work with small and diverse businesses.  As supplier diversity is not only required for corporations it also enhances their reputation.  Other advantages include loyalty from customers who choose to do business only with companies whose business practices are socially responsible.

Having a diverse staff makes it easier for your clients to relate and reaches a broader audience leading to increased profitability and opportunities for workers.  By bringing together individuals from different backgrounds and experiences, businesses can more effectively market to consumers from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, women, and consumers who are gay or transgender. It is no surprise, that diversifying the workplace helps businesses increase their market share. There are always going to be people who you relate to and others you may not as much.  It is important to have colleagues that are different from you because maybe they will find a connection with that person.

Your company should be diverse and unique in every way whether it is race, age, orientation and even skill related.  If it is not, start by looking at why.
