Feeling stalled in your job search? You are not alone! On September 23, MPIOC helped members take control of the wheel during the Career Development Workshop, “Driving Your Career Path Forward”.
Beth Hoffman, CDS and Gina Gayton, CMP steered the conversation with special guests Marcy Morrison, Founder Careers with Wings; Jen Morris, Founder careerinspo.com and Nicole Newman, Vice President Searchwide Global.
As Jen shared, it is no wonder people feel stuck:
• 2% who apply online are going to get an interview
• 25% of available positions make it to a job board
• 70% of new roles are landed through networking and referrals
How can you avoid detours?
• Stay focused, find your passion: avoid the initial rush to get to the “next thing”! Stop to think about what you love and how you can leverage your experience to make a difference in a new industry.
• Define your value proposition: focus your resume on what you can do for the employer, what is in it for them by hiring you? Make sure you highlight your transferable skills at the top of your resume before they dive into your work history.
• Remain adaptable and flexible: employers are looking for candidates who fit the company culture and will roll up their sleeves.
One thing was clear, never has networking played such a critical role in looking for a new job. Do not hesitate to cast your net far and wide, use LinkedIn to your benefit, and of course call on your MPIOC family for help and referrals. Happy Hunting!
