  • Tell us a bit about yourself

I grew up in the United Kingdom, but I was born in Manitoba, and I’ve moved back and forth between the UK and Canada a couple of times. After living in the East Midlands and Cardiff in the UK, and Lethbridge, Calgary, and Vancouver in Canada, my husband and I have been in Ottawa since 2011 and we’re here to stay in this great city! I love getting outside to enjoy the wonderful parks and walks along the Canal and rivers, even in the depths of winter.

  • How did you join the industry? Was it a straight or a more circuitous route?

By accident! After completing my undergrad in law and politics at Cardiff University, I spent a number of years in general office management roles, with an accounting focus. Then, as manager at the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences at the University of British Columbia, I oversaw the planning of a variety of workshops, seminars, and summer schools ‘off the side of my desk’ as the saying goes. When UBC hosted a joint conference of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and Mexican Mathematical Society I was happy to lend a hand to the CMS team with on-site logistics, and this first experience of larger conferences was inspiring. Now at the Stem Cell Network, our scientific conference is a highlight of the year and I love helping to bring our community together to share knowledge and forge the connections that spark productive research collaborations.

Social Media

  • What is your favourite industry app?

Trello is a fabulous tool for managing all kinds of tasks all in one place. It’s great for building meeting agendas, to-do lists, notes, timelines, and deadline dates for multiple ongoing projects involving multiple team members. The past two years have really shown the value of collaboration tools like Trello in supporting remote-working teams. Also, as we know, a large part of success in event planning depends on solid organizational skills, and Trello certainly helps to keep me on track.

  • What are you currently reading or would recommend reading?

For a couple of years now, one of my goals has been to achieve my CMP designation and 2022 will be the year! So right now… I am mostly reading the Events Industry Council Manual and Glossary and ‘PMM6’, as well as my flashcards and notes of course. Shout out to MPI Ottawa’s own Paul Glover who is leading a fantastic CMP study group – good luck to all my fellow students!

  • What is the best giveaway item you’ve ever received at a conference/event?

The best ‘swag’ items are things that I will actually use. I can never get enough notebooks, post-it notes, and pens, but I have enough water bottles now, thank you 😊. Considering sustainability initiatives and waste reduction increasingly at the heart of conference planning, I prefer to avoid novelty items that all too often just go straight to landfill.

  • Do you collect anything?

Since Molly the Cat joined our household in 2018, I have been a collector of cat toys. Currently, the red and blue caterpillar is a favourite, but Molly and I have a varied collection and a lot of them live under the couch.

  • What was your favourite networking event?

You never know who you’ll run into at a networking event and often the most interesting connections happen when you least expect it. I always enjoy the friendly, interesting, and fun events hosted by Business Events Montreal and I am looking forward to connecting with other members of MPI Ottawa at ‘Meet Week’ events – if you see me there, come and say hello!
