Jocelyn M. Small, HMCC (MPI New Jersey Chapter), a planner and educator with BCD Meetings & Events, received an MPI Foundation and KPMG Tuition Scholarship to aid her professional growth. Learn more about the resulting impact and advice she has for other meeting and event professionals.

How did the MPI Foundation and KPMG Tuition Scholarship impact you?
Receiving the MPI Foundation scholarship has been deeply personal for me. It’s helped bring me closer to a goal I’ve been working toward for over 20 years. As a caregiver to two children with special needs, my financial priorities have always been centered around their care, which meant putting some of my own professional development on hold. This opportunity removed that barrier and allowed me to invest in myself without guilt or hesitation.
I’m also just a few months away from graduating with my bachelor’s degree, something that once felt out of reach. I can honestly say I would not be this close to the finish line without the support of this scholarship. It didn’t just give me access to an event, it gave me momentum, confidence and the reminder that my goals still matter, too. Being in that environment, surrounded by industry leaders and peers, reminded me that I’m not just participating in this industry, I’m growing into the leader I’ve always envisioned.
Can you share a favorite takeaway from the experience?
One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of staying both innovative and adaptable. The conversations around technology, attendee experience, and evolving client expectations reinforced that our industry is constantly evolving, and we have to be willing to evolve with it. At the same time, there was a strong emphasis on human connection, which really resonated with me. No matter how advanced things become, relationships are still at the core of what we do.
Did that experience affect your perception of professional scholarships and/or the MPI Foundation?
Absolutely. It shifted my perspective completely. I no longer see scholarships as just financial assistance, but as intentional investments in people. The MPI Foundation is clearly committed to creating access and developing professionals who are ready to grow but may need that extra support. That kind of investment feels meaningful and empowering.
What would you say to event industry peers who may be hesitant to apply for similar scholarships?
I would say apply, even if you’re unsure. So many of us count ourselves out before we even give ourselves a chance. If you’re passionate about this industry and committed to your growth, you are exactly who these opportunities are for. The worst that can happen is you don’t get selected, but the best case can truly change your trajectory.
