As we navigate the ever-evolving event industry landscape, embracing inclusivity and investing in our community and ourselves are not options; they are imperative for success and for a robust, thriving MPI for years to come.
Civil rights activist Jesse Jackson famously said, “Inclusion is not a matter of political correctness. It is the key to growth.” These words resonate deeply in the context of the global meeting and event industry and the MPI community, underscoring the essence of inclusivity as a cornerstone of our community’s strength, enriching our collective understanding and propelling innovation.
Inclusivity, however, isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. It needs to extend beyond welcoming diverse voices and ensure equitable access to opportunities and resources. This is where partnerships and wide-ranging professional education play a pivotal role. As MPI builds more content and opportunities on inclusive experiences and business practices (such as the Inclusive Event Strategist certificate program, sponsored by Visit San Antonio), we are actively engaging with industry partners—some of with whom we’ve worked for years, others joining the discussion anew. Throughout this growth, we’re working with an expansive definition of “inclusivity” to ensure those with hidden disabilities not only feel welcome but get true value from the community
As event professionals we pride ourselves on building welcoming, accommodating environments for mutual success. If you—whether a decades-long vet or a student—don’t feel a sense of belonging at a meeting industry event or within a professional online community, something needs to change.
That's the beauty of the MPI community; it provides so many avenues for networking and education, including formal and casual intergenerational exchanges. Professional education serves as a bridge that connects experienced professionals and emerging talent, fostering growth for both. Through industry gatherings, we create spaces for knowledge to flow, transcending generational boundaries and fostering a culture of lifelong learning.
Remember, your new hires are the future of the meeting industry—an industry that’s becoming larger and more complex every day. A focus on growing the MPI community must be seeped in the needs and desires of Gen Z, Gen Alpha and the generations that follow.
As we embrace inclusivity and prioritize professional education within our community, we not only enrich our own lives and careers but also contribute to the greater good of our industry and society. Together, let us continue to nurture an environment where everyone feels valued, empowered and inspired to reach their fullest potential. In doing so, we ensure that our association and profession remain vibrant, resilient and poised for a future filled with endless possibilities. Because when we meet, we change the world.
