While some meeting and event professionals may slow down for summer, the MPI team continues full-steam ahead planning theEVENT—and we are absolutely loving it! For this year’s theEVENT (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, Sept. 7-9), the powerful theme of Explore Your Nature is purposefully driving the programming. There’s something uniquely energizing about designing an event that doesn’t just take place in a destination but is shaped by it.
Inspired by the powerful Wolastoq (also known as the St. John’s River), our theSTREAMS learning tracks reflect the natural flow of real-world work, purpose and passion. These tracks include the following.

I’m especially excited about how we’re kicking things off with a keynote that sets the tone for everything that follows.
We’re thrilled to welcome Mike Downie as our opening keynote speaker. Downie is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, storyteller and co-founder of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund—Canada’s largest reconciliation fund. You may know him as the creative force behind "The Secret Path" and "The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal," the intimate documentary that followed the band’s final tour and won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Downie’s keynote, "Creating Community and Telling Canada’s Story," is exactly what we need right now.
In an industry built on storytelling and connection, he reminds us of the deeper role we play not just in planning logistics but in shaping culture, identity and belonging. His work is deeply personal and socially impactful, and his ability to connect audiences to big ideas through intimate human stories is unmatched. I can’t think of a more fitting way to begin an event rooted in purpose.
And it doesn’t stop there. One of the ways we’re letting Fredericton shape the learning is by getting attendees out of the venue and into the community through thoughtfully curated Learning Journeys. They are immersive educational experiences deeply rooted in local culture, community values and innovation.
You might find yourself on the Gallery Hop, strolling through downtown Fredericton with guided stops at local institutions like the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Gallery 78 and Gallery on Queen as you experience how art reflects and unites communities. Or maybe you’ll choose the 12 Neighbours Community, where you’ll visit a powerful initiative focused on reducing homelessness and poverty.
If you’re drawn to a more sensory journey, join Chef Jenna White at Killarney Lake for a traditional indigenous experience that brings people together for an immersive outdoor gathering in a natural setting to share bannock, tea and conversation around a fire. You can also take part in the Brewing Bold Coffee Tour, which takes you to local cafes to gain fresh insight into how small businesses differentiate themselves in a competitive market—and how you can, too.
Registration is open and trust me you don’t want to miss what we’re creating in Fredericton. Gathering is in our nature; creating exceptional events is in yours. Whether you’re looking to elevate your strategy, deepen your connections or simply reignite your passion for this work, theEVENT is where it all comes together.
