Shel Silverstein's poetry has always held a special place in my heart—I even used one of his books to propose to my wife—but I rarely think about it in the context of meetings and events. In the pages of his beloved classics such as "Where the Sidewalk Ends" there are, however, timeless lessons that can resonate deeply with event professionals.
"Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts.Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts.Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me…Anything can happen, child. Anything can be."
The global meeting and event industry wields immense power and influence, driving significant societal and economic changes. This impact stems not only from the fundamental human need for face-to-face interactions but also from our vibrant, diverse and inclusive community. Of course, the work required by the individual professionals underpinning all of this is rarely easy.
Many event professionals have recently shared with us unexpected disruptions that they’re facing— everything from cost increases to the cancellation of contracted business. If this sounds familiar, know that you are not alone and that MPI is dedicated to helping you through such difficult times; our community stands with you, as it has done through countless challenges since the inception of our association more than 50 years ago.
Think about the last major obstacle you faced, and the skills you utilized and the connections you leaned on to overcome the challenge to achieve what may have seemed impossible. Those same resources, gained through your lived experiences with MPI, plus many more connections across the MPI community, remain at your fingertips.
Whether you need new knowledge to navigate the evolving business landscape, an expanded professional network, financial assistance for continuing education or simply empathy from someone who understands your reality, your MPI community is here for you. And our MPI volunteer leaders and staff are constantly striving to enhance and improve that support.
This commitment will be evident throughout the World Education Congress (WEC) in St. Louis, June 18-20, as thousands of event professionals come together, rallying to demonstrate our collective strength and solve complex problems for and with each other.
By working together to uplift and nurture industry professionals, you and MPI are ensuring that meetings and events continue to drive meaningful, positive change for individuals, businesses and governments worldwide.
Anything can happen; anything can be.
