Staying Engaged: The Power of Human Connections
Virtual Chapter Meeting

EIC Preferred Provider Logo 10.18.18
DAY/DATE:

Wednesday, May 13, 2020

PRESENTER:
Michael Owen

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
There's no point in cheerleading; this crisis is a tough row to hoe. We have limited points of reference about how we are to proceed, given the challenges we face. My MPI leadership experience includes work as chapter President on 9/11, as chapter facilitator working with the Gulf States Chapter in the months following Hurricane Katrina, and as an IBOD member addressing the financial crisis. There may be a few things we learned from those experiences that will help us now, but this crisis is so different, we will need to be agile, open to change, and as prepared as possible to operate in a new normal.
One constant theme through recovery in the aftermath of these crises is the value of a professional home, a community of peers, prospects, and even competitors who are all in the same boat as you.
Join us as we discuss the importance of community through continued engagement as a tool to maintain skills and connect with opportunities. Hear from your chapter leaders – who face the same business and personal challenges as you – about what it means to take on such extra responsibility in a crisis, and to share insight as to how the chapter operates, and steps they are taking to ensure sustainability. Learn what your leadership team is doing to support member engagement locally, and what resources are available through MPI Global.
Allowing others to help is hard, but it ultimately raises everyone's game, and suddenly that unattainable goal isn't nearly so far off.

Here are four compelling reasons not to go it alone:
1. Collective wisdom. No one person ever has all of the answers, and regardless of the amount of Google-ability you may have, consulting with others is always going to give you better information.
2. Support and belief. Some days those big goals just seem impossible. On those days when you most want to give up, you need to lean on your community the most. They believe in you—probably more than you believe in yourself.
3. New ideas. When you are working within a community of like-minded people that the wisdom of crowds is considerably higher than any one person working alone, divergent world views and lenses mean that we all approach the same problem slightly differently.
4. Borrowed motivation. Even on those days when your belief in yourself isn't waning, doing what needs to get done can seem overwhelming. Look around your community and be inspired!
