What CMP Meant for Me +EIC's CMP Updates

The Events Industry Council (EIC) serves as the global voice for the business events industry, leading efforts in advocacy, research, and the establishment of industry standards.  Their commitment to excellence is exemplified through its prestigious Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) program—widely recognized as a hallmark of professionalism and expertise in the events industry.

In February 2025, EIC unveiled the latest CMP International Standards (CMP-IS)—the result of years of collaboration involving over 1,000 CMPs and CMP Fellows contributing as subject-matter experts. These updated standards reflect the evolving nature of global events and now include new domains such as Sustainability and Social Impact, Technology Integration, and the Evaluation Process.

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) is one of more than 34 association members of the EIC, collectively representing over 100,000 individuals across the hospitality and meetings landscape.

At the local level, I know MPI Philadelphia Area is proud to have 81+ current Chapter members that have their CMP designation, which includes more than 15 volunteer Facilitators for the CMP Study Group.

I personally need to thank the MPI Philadelphia Area Chapter for their 2010 CMP Study Group where I was part of the cohort that was the LAST to take the paper-based exam. It was a 3+ hour exam in person at the Hampton Inn Laguardia Airport in New York, and it took six weeks for me to receive my results in the mail.

Today, CMP exams are provided electronically on a rolling basis at testing sites around the world, including here in Philadelphia.

Having a CMP designation has opened many doors for me personally, from job offers and work projects to expanding my professional network. I have had the privilege of being a CMP Study Group Facilitator for over a decade where I have served alongside some amazing CMP professionals and watched dozens of hospitality professionals earn their designations! And I can’t wait for the next session.
