A Look into the Revamp of the New Awards Gala Nomination Process

Last year, under Member Care, a new committee was formed to revamp the Awards Gala nomination and selection process. Co-chaired by Meg LaPlante and Gabrielle Whittaker, and working alongside the Director, Member Care, the Recognition Subcommittee streamlined and implemented new features to make the awards process easier and more transparent. This new system was implemented in 2019 and will be fine-tuned for the 2020 Awards Gala.

The process works as follows:

  • A list of all current active MPI Ottawa members is pulled through MPI International and is then reviewed by the Recognition Subcommittee. Based on membership category (i.e. Planner, Supplier, etc.) they determine which award category members qualify for. Once an initial assessment has been determined, the list is then shared with the Member Care committee to see if any names have been misplaced.
  • Once categories have been determined, names are entered directly into the nomination form by the MPI Secretariat.
  • Nominations open and chapter members are asked to submit nominations.
  • Once a nomination has been submitted, an email is sent informing the nominee and they are asked to fill out the nominee questionnaire. In order to accept and qualify for your nomination this questionnaire must be filled out. If a nominee does not fill out the questionnaire by the given deadline they will not be recognized as having been nominated.
  • Once nominations are closed and all questionnaires have been submitted, the Recognition Subcommittee compiles the information and sends it to the selection committee.
  • The selection committee is made up of the MPI Ottawa President, immediate Past President, President Elect, VP of Finance, VP of Communications, VP of Membership and VP of Education.
  • The selection committee reviews all questionnaires for each category by completing individual grading sheets. These sheets run on a points-based system, which helps to alleviate any bias. Should someone on the selection committee work in the same organization as a nominee, they will remove themselves from the selection process for that category.
  • Once final decisions have been made, the selection committee sends award recipient names to a decided member of the Awards Gala committee. The committee is then responsible to order the statuettes and create the PowerPoint presentation.
