2020 was definitely a year to remember . . . or, maybe it was one we’d rather soon forget! Like most events in 2020, the Annual Festive Dinner took place virtually. The planning committee was faced with the challenge of creating a fun and engaging event to wrap up what was a challenging year and to truly connect with our peers over the holiday season. Rather than looking back, they chose to look ahead, inviting everyone to login to “Eat. Drink. Be Cozy and Sleigh Hello to 2021!”

All though Event Entertainment may revolve around a theme, which is determined by the goals of an event - everything else including design, decorations, sounds and lights, is illuminated by this theme. Entertainment quality depends a lot on how elements of programming function in a well-balanced and harmonious manner. How much impact entertainment is going to have depends on how well it is executed.

In setting up a virtual or hybrid event, where does one start? What are lower thirds? How do I incorporate PowerPoint slides? My conference needs to be bilingual; how does that work? All these questions are top of mind for planners. Finding answers can be daunting and research often generates more questions.

Then Friday was here, it was noon, I fired up my Microsoft Teams and was set for a merry afternoon! We kicked off with comments from our president who has a great way with words, and wrapped up the accomplishments and strength of our team during an intense year very nicely... (read on)

My MPI Ottawa Prix Prestige preparedness was a bit different this year. I ironed my shirt and cut my hair, but where last year I turned to put on my dress pants and polished my shoes, instead I went for my sweatpants and checked my Wi-Fi. Getting to the gala was much easier too. Ottawa traffic? No, thanks! My only detour was a drooling dog reminding me that the ironing and hair cutting had made dinner late.

On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, members of our MPI Ottawa Chapter gathered virtually for the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Past President, Allison Collins ran the formal part of the AGM with former VP of Finance, Ashley Craven, CMP updating members on the financial position of the chapter. The chapter experienced a rough couple of months with the pandemic hitting Ontario in March but, with the help of generous sponsors, the MPI Foundation and EM+ – the chapter has rebounded. That said, it will still take a while before the chapter re-builds its reserves and is in a financially healthy position.

When in-person meetings and gatherings were still happening, there was a growing trend to include a land acknowledgment at the beginning. As part of reconciliation efforts with Indigenous Peoples (First Nation, Metis, and Inuit), groups would take the time to recognize the original stewards of the territory where the event is taking place. Sometimes this is just a few words spoken by the chairperson or emcee, or it could include inviting and gifting an Elder or knowledge keeper to offer an opening prayer and to smudge the space. So, how does offering a land acknowledgement move organizations and the broader public toward reconciliation? And, is this action more than just reconciliation lip service?
