Beyond the Sale: Ryan Young on Leadership, Connection, and Growth
After 14 years with MPI and a career that’s taken him across some of Canada’s most beautiful destinations, Ryan Young has built his success on something simple but powerful—people. As the Assistant Managing Director of Sales at Hilton Worldwide, he leads Canada’s global sales team with warmth, humility and care. But what really defines him is the confidence he builds in those around him.
Like many in hospitality, Young didn’t plan to end up here. His career began in the Canadian Rockies, working in mountain lodges surrounded by travellers and locals who shared his love of connection. That experience sparked something in him. From there, he worked his way through roles at Brookstreet Hotel and Ottawa Marriott before joining Hilton, where he now represents the brand across Canada and abroad.
“It’s the best of both worlds,” Young says with a smile. “I get to travel and see our hotels in action, but I’m still closely connected to our Canadian clients.”
Throughout his career, one thing has stayed constant which is his belief that people are the heart of hospitality. Whether it’s a client, a team member or someone just starting out, Young leads with empathy and genuine interest in others.
His mentorship style reflects that. Instead of focusing on one guiding mentor, Young says he’s learned from many. Every stage of his journey brought new lessons, and now he’s paying that forward by supporting others in their growth. His approach is built on three key values: stay humble, stay hungry, and stay people-smart.
He also believes that being open and honest, especially about challenges, makes for stronger leaders. “Recognizing that being vulnerable is okay and shows maturity,” he says. To Young, vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s a sign of self-awareness and strength.
In an industry that’s always changing, Young finds balance through consistency. He teaches his team to focus on what really matters and not get lost in the noise of busy days. He calls them the “big rocks,” the important goals that deserve time and energy.
Even with a team spread across the country, Young keeps everyone connected. He hosts regular one-on-one chats and team huddles, making space for real conversations beyond just work updates. He also keeps things light, adding fun moments like trivia games and photo challenges that bring the team closer together.
When it comes to mentoring, Young’s advice is simple: stay interested, not interesting. He believes mentorship isn’t about showing off what you know, it’s about listening, paying attention, and being there when someone needs support.
For those starting their careers, Young’s message is clear: be curious, take chances, and don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Confidence grows from doing, learning, and trying again. He also reminds his team to balance personal ambition with purpose. Success is even more rewarding when it helps the whole team win.
Looking to the future, Young feels optimistic. With technology making global connections easier and new leaders bringing bold ideas, he sees an exciting shift in hospitality. “Everything feels more reachable now,” he says.
At his core, Young believes leadership isn’t about titles or achievements; it’s about people. He leads with heart, consistency and genuine care, leaving everyone he works with a little more confident, capable and inspired than before.
