Tell us a bit about yourself
Born in Ottawa, lived here most of my first 30 years with the exception of a university stint in Madrid Spain. From the age of 30-40, I lived in Toronto and opened the D. E. Systems office there. I have been back in Ottawa for ten years now.
How did you join the industry?
It was a bit circuitous; I have always worked in IT and since the 1990s we (DES) were renting computers, mostly to corporate clients and training centre markets. We advertised our computer rental services and in the mid to late 90s, conference organizers started calling us. By 2001 most of our hardware rental services were event based and we expanded into software to service the event market.
Social Media
Right now, it is Streamyard. Streamyard can make anyone a video streaming and production whiz. Its beauty is its simplicity, while not as powerful as some streaming software; its simplicity means literally anyone can produce professional livestreams. It is bringing livestreaming and production to the masses for a very low price and can be integrated into just about any virtual platform.
Inspiration
I will never skydive, so that is out of the question! However; I would open a Vancouver office if the pandemic would settle down and the stars aligned.
Professional
It was a quote from Steve Jobs actually: “When you grow up you tend to get told the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much.” Everything around you that you call life was made up by people who were no smarter than you. Once you learn that, you will never be the same again.
Personal
I’m 50 years old and it can be a sweet spot for many people, whereby you have financial stability and you still feel young, vibrant and healthy. When I was very young, I had no money, and I assume as I age, my health will start to slide, so I am just enjoying this space and time very much.
Networking
Definitely start light. Ask a Travel question. A bit challenging in this current moment but the key to starting great connections is to make them feel good and everyone loves to travel. People don’t always remember what you say but they always remember how you made them feel.
