Beloved industry veteran, Charter Member of Meeting Professionals International St. Louis Area Chapter, Helen Jane Comer passed away at the age of 96 on Good Friday morning.
Helen Jane Manion was born in St. Louis, attended local Catholic schools, then Webster College (now University) majoring in Physical Education, ultimately chairing the department. She received her master’s at Washington University and subsequently decided to try her hand in the hospitality industry through sales at the Coronado Hotel. After marrying the irrepressible Irishman, Tom Comer, they produced two lovely daughters, Chrissi and Kelly. Tom was often seen with Helen at industry events as a merry addition, sadly predeceasing her in 1999. Helen’s professional aspirations further led her to a successful sales career with Marriott. It was during this time that she started her involvement with MPI becoming a valued International and chapter board member. She received the coveted International Supplier of the Year award from MPI in 1985. Following 38 years of loyal service to Marriott and the industry, Helen retired to devote her time to her two daughters and their children. She also enjoyed traveling to Marco Island in the winter with her forever friend Ann O’ Connell. Despite the passing of both their husbands, Helen and Ann likewise continued to host their fabulous Derby parties at their homes, a tradition started over fifty years ago.
