Throughout my life, I have always been told I possess leadership qualities. I’ve had a lot of time to consider what that statement has meant. Does it mean I can follow a rule book or Roberts Rules of Order well? Or maybe I motivate people through conversation and discussions? Or maybe I always say yes too energetically!
As I reflect, it is important for all of us to ask ourselves that question: What can you do to lead yourself within the meetings industry?
When I answer that question, I recall how I began my MPI journey, which was with the Indiana chapter as an association planner. I immediately joined committees and worked my way to be slated for the board, only to be recruited for a position in Atlanta. Unfortunately, I found myself having to resign, due to the situation, but immersed myself into the industry in a whole new way once I was in Atlanta with my professional career.
After taking a few years away due to my busy work life, I found that I missed volunteering locally. I realized I was reading newsletters and not going to events because I didn’t know anyone. It takes just one leap to get involved to change that situation. When asked, I found myself with the Phoenix Awards, assisting with social media and marketing and then handling the run of show. Now, on the board as Director of Membership, I have found a community of industry professionals who I partner with side by side leading the chapter.
Without the opportunity to serve, I would haven’t made the connections I have today. It can be intimidating to show up to a monthly luncheon or quarterly networking event if you do not know many people. Yet I find myself smiling when I speak with individuals who do just that. I implore all of you if you are reading this to take a new leap, a new chance, a new friendship as we go into our new year together as MPI Georgia. You never know what you may get out of it, or the friendship that will help you grow here within the chapter.
