Ginger Garner, CMP
Associate Director, Meeting Planning and Management
College Board

This month, ReConnect is honoring Ginger Garner, who has been a continuous monthly contributor since 2018. Ginger has many qualities, besides her writing talent, that shine each month. As ReConnect Editor, I never worry about receiving the New Member feature knowing that it is in the capable hands of Ginger.   Her story is long overdue. I was delighted when she agreed to share her hospitality journey.

Unfortunately, Ginger's schedule doesn't allow her to be active in a face-to-face role, but she doesn't let that stop her from being an exceptional volunteer. We chuckle through email that one of these days, we may actually meet!

How did you get involved / become aware of the MPI Georgia chapter?

Once meeting planning became a focus at College Board, I sought out ways to familiarize myself with the event industry. MPI was discussed as part of an internal training and when I found out there was a Georgia chapter, I quickly joined for networking and training opportunities. In 2007, I decided to pursue my CMP designation and joined the CMP Study Group. I was energized by being surrounded by so many event professionals. It took me a few years to get my professional footing; however, in 2018, I was fortunate to join ReConnect writing new member features. It has been my pleasure to profile remarkable event professionals and work with such an amazing committee. And I would be remiss not to highlight how the Georgia chapter supported its members during the pandemic. The shift to holding meetings and events virtually strengthened my connection to the MPI GA as someone who cannot often make it to in-person events.

How did you get into the hospitality industry?

I began working for College Board a year after graduating from Georgia State University. Ultimately, a few years in, the company decided to place a focus on events, and I was appointed the meeting planner. I quickly realized I had a passion for event planning. So, in 2016, I obtained a master's in hospitality administration from the University of Las Vegas Nevada. I am lucky that my current position within the company still allows me to indulge in event planning on a national scope bringing together education leaders from across the country.

What's one of your most unique personal or work accomplishments?

In November, I celebrated 21 years at College Board. Throughout the years, I feel fortunate to find continued fulfillment in my work and connection with my colleagues. I am also grateful that my various positions have all had an element of event planning; it fills my cup, so to speak.
