Ask the Expert – You Have Untapped Abilities

Question: I am considering taking a new position and have been approached by firms within my industry but not exactly what I do. How should I evaluate pursuing the position?

Answer: In this situation I suggest you look at what you know about this firm and their business model. In each industry there are numerous firms that provide a piece of what it takes to produce an event or business product. Look into what pieces of the industry this firm produces and how you interact with them. You may be surprised to find that you know more than you think and could be a real asset to this firm.  Also do not forget that each industry has the same basic need for people who can create relationships.

Question: Currently I am considering a position on the other side of the industry. In my current role I have purchased specific services and wonder if I can go on the other side and now sell those same services. Do you think that is possible?

Answer: One of the hardest things is learning how to sell or provide services to someone who is on the other side of the table. The advantage you would possess is knowing what someone needs to buy and have the ability to shape your offer so it provides a custom solution for the buyer. It is all about knowing what the buyer wants to achieve and how you can meet that need from previously being on the other side.

Question: There is a position I am considering but I am not sure if I can do everything listed in the job description. How do you think I should proceed?

Answer: First, be aware that many times the job description is written to scare off many people and create a narrow group who might apply. While this can limit the number of people being considered it can also discourage people who might make a great contribution to the organization based on the way the duties of the position are stated. Look at the parts of the position where you feel most comfortable and then list the areas of concern you have for duties you have never tried or may not understand. If you get the opportunity for an interview be proactive and state what parts of the position appeal to you and where you may have a concern. You need to imagine what questions may be asked of you so make sure you have taken enough time to prepare and have a list of possible questions and your answers. Make sure you also have a list of questions based on the areas of the position where you have a concern. If you prepare properly you may find you can meet the requirements of the position and have a great opportunity ahead of you.
