What is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month?
Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQIA+ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.
Why does LGBTQIA+ representation & celebration matter?
LGBTQIA+ representation in the meetings industry and across the globe is a powerful indicator of a healthy, diverse and vibrant culture. Pride Month is a time to remember LGBTQIA+ history, learn, educate and give back. In supporting LGBTQIA+ organizations, you're contributing directly to the rights, educational initiatives and programs that the community needs.
Especially in 2022, it's important to uplift trans people and queer people of color during Pride Month, as they contribute so much to the history, culture and life of the queer community.
