jasonJason J. Galui, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army Retired & SMU Professor

Jason J. Galui is a Professor of Practice in Executive Education at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.  Jason joined SMU Cox following more than 20 years of extensive experience and distinguished service to the United States during which he personally advised President Barack Obama and President Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office along with their respective National Security Advisors, including Ambassador Susan Rice; Lieutenant General (retired) Michael Flynn; and Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster.

Jason’s military career was quite unique.  Not only did he lead soldiers in combat and teach economics to West Point cadets, he also directly advised the most senior U.S. leaders in two very different White Houses and in the Pentagon.  Jason served as a key point of national security continuity between the Obama and Trump Administrations.  Spanning nearly three years on the staff of the National Security Council (NSC), including the 2017 Presidential Transition, Jason served the NSC in three different capacities:  Chief of Staff, South Asia Affairs; NSC Deputy Executive Secretary; and Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the National Security Advisor.

During his second White House experience, Jason served as Senior Advisor for National Security to the (Acting) Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), and he led CEA’s team responsible for analyzing issues at the nexus of economics and national security.  Prior to his White House contributions, Jason personally advised General Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Indo-Pacific issues, Afghanistan, and on keeping faith with the military family.  Traveling the world with General Dempsey provided Jason with keen insight on the complementary relationships between diplomacy, economics, and military power.

A two-time Assistant Professor of Economics in the Department of Social Sciences at the United States Military Academy, Jason taught and mentored two generations of West Point cadets.  He deployed to Kabul in 2011-2012 serving as Strategic Advisor to the Commanding General of the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan.  Commissioned as an Armor officer, Jason led soldiers in combat during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and held leadership positions from the platoon level to the White House.

Jason is Founder/CEO of 4 Liberty Consulting LLC, a global advisory firm providing clients custom services across leader development, strategic decision making, and navigating the global competitive landscape.  Jason serves on the Board of Trustees at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, Massachusetts; on the Board of Directors of The Medic Now Foundation, a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization breaking barriers in veteran and service member health care access; and on the Board of Advisors of Deep Knowledge Investing, a research firm examining the impact of political and economic events on financial markets.  Jason is also Economic Advisor to the President and Visiting Professor of Practice in Economic Statecraft at Joint Special Operations University, Headquarters United States Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

Jason earned an M.S. in Economics from The University of Texas at Austin and a B.S. in Economics from the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Jason and his wife, Samantha, have been married for 17 years and they have two children.
