MPI Toronto Chapter PD Workshop - Emergency Preparedness & Crisis Communications, followed by Just Networking/Volunteer Recruitment

May 15, 2019
3:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Toronto, ON
Organizer
MPI Toronto

Have you ever thought that the success of future events - and potentially your entire business – may be determined by the effectiveness of your crisis response?

What is an emergency action plan? How are security protocols evolving for US participants in Canada? Are cyber threats really an issue?  How do you insulate your event/destination reputation during a crisis? Where are the risks?

These are just a few of the questions Jenn Houtby-Ferguson will cover during this workshop. Jenn is a sought-after speaker and facilitator passionate about emergency preparedness and destination disaster communication. She is an MPI Accredited Trainer having trained a wide variety of teams for the Global Certification in Meeting and Business Events (GCMBE) and has lead CMP study groups in BC and here with the MPI Toronto Chapter. With an extensive background in marketing and crisis communications, Jenn brings a unique blend of executive level experience with destination marketing organizations, municipalities and non-profits.

In this age of information, emergency readiness and reputation management are key competencies for planners, venues and entire destinations. From food poisoning to natural disasters, event professionals, hoteliers, venues, and destinations must all understand their role, and the role of local government to both prepare for and respond.

What you will take away from this workshop:

  • It happened to me! Tales from the front line.
  • What is emergency readiness and why it matters to meetings & events.
  • Who is responsible? Our legal and moral obligations as Canadian event professionals.
  • Ontario hazards and expected actions.
  • Natural disasters and critical incidents (cyber threats and terrorism).
  • Be ready: how to create critical incident protocols.
  • Key components of an Emergency Action Plan.
  • Where to go for help? (Additional resources).

This eye-opening session is a must for all industry professionals and will help you be best, at planning for the worst.

The PD session will run from 3-6pm. Following the PD session, join us for the Just Networking/Volunteer Recruitment networking from 6-8pm. While connecting and networking, learn about the various committees available to members within the MPI Toronto Chapter. New committees start on July 1st so come out and sign up for the start of our new fiscal year.

We look forward to seeing you on May 15!
