Beyond the Plate: Elevating DEIA Through Event Food & Beverage

Presented by Tracy Stuckrath, thrive! meetings & events
Feb. 7, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Every meal tells a story—and at events, it’s a story of values, culture, and belonging. Food and beverage choices are more than menu items; they are powerful tools for fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA). Yet, many events unintentionally miss the mark, leaving some guests feeling excluded or overlooked. In this interactive session, we’ll explore how to transform your event's culinary experience into a celebration of inclusion. From understanding how disability laws impact dining experiences to crafting menus that embrace diverse needs and preferences, you'll learn actionable strategies to create events where everyone feels valued and seen.

Participants will:
  • Discover how intentional F&B planning can strengthen DEIA initiatives.
  • Navigate legal and logistical considerations to ensure accessible dining.
  • Create event experiences that leverage diverse perspectives, fostering a deeper sense of connection and community.

DEI Connects

Presented by Adarra Blount, Assistant Site Manager, Historic Stagville
Feb. 7, 8:00-8:20 a.m.

The MPI-CC DEI Committee invites you to learn about Historic Stagville, a state historic site in Durham that includes the remnants of the one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30,000 acres of land, and claimed ownership over about 900 people who were enslaved on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation, including original slave quarters (1851), a massive barn (1860), and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation.
