MPI Leadership Webinar Series: How Work Culture Fuels Mental Health Struggles and Solutions to Address Them

June 24, 2025
12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
Organizer

Topic: Many organizations offer mental health days and stigma-reduction campaigns, but they continue to overlook a major contributor to distress: the workplace itself. Work/place factors such as chronic overwork, isolation, fear-based leadership and low control are linked to anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and suicide, yet these factors often go unspoken in leadership conversations. With ~50% of people experiencing suicidal thoughts never disclosing them or showing signs, we need to move beyond “knowing the signs” and examine how structure, culture and climate can either add to someone’s pain, or act as a protective factor. We'll talk with Dr. Colleen on what these factors are, how they show up in our workplaces and the "solutions" available to address and/or eliminate these work/workplace factors.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Colleen Saringer (PhD), Founder of Dr. Colleen Speaks, is a blue-collar woman wrapped in a PhD package. She’s spent 25 years helping workplaces improve their culture, communication, and mental health outcomes. Her work is rooted in both professional expertise and personal experience, from growing up in a family-run construction business, supporting her spouse and his construction business, to being a published, peer-reviewed author on workplace health policy. But the most defining part of Dr. Colleen’s story began at age 13, when she first learned how work can quietly unravel a life and contribute to suicidal ideation and suicide. That moment shaped everything she does today. Dr. Colleen speaks candidly about how work impacts our mental health, not just for those in leadership, but for everyone on the payroll. Her talks are known for being raw, relatable, and practical. Dr. Colleen doesn’t just raise awareness on mental health and suicide; she guides audiences toward action; and believes the best solutions aren’t always the most complicated. Often, they’re built on kindness, integrity, and accountability.
