My MPI Ottawa Prix Prestige preparedness was a bit different this year. I ironed my shirt and cut my hair, but where last year I turned to put on my dress pants and polished my shoes, instead I went for my sweatpants and checked my Wi-Fi. Getting to the gala was much easier too. Ottawa traffic? No, thanks! My only detour was a drooling dog reminding me that the ironing and hair cutting had made dinner late.
On Wednesday, September 23, 2020, members of our MPI Ottawa Chapter gathered virtually for the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Past President, Allison Collins ran the formal part of the AGM with former VP of Finance, Ashley Craven, CMP updating members on the financial position of the chapter. The chapter experienced a rough couple of months with the pandemic hitting Ontario in March but, with the help of generous sponsors, the MPI Foundation and EM+ – the chapter has rebounded. That said, it will still take a while before the chapter re-builds its reserves and is in a financially healthy position.

When in-person meetings and gatherings were still happening, there was a growing trend to include a land acknowledgment at the beginning. As part of reconciliation efforts with Indigenous Peoples (First Nation, Metis, and Inuit), groups would take the time to recognize the original stewards of the territory where the event is taking place. Sometimes this is just a few words spoken by the chairperson or emcee, or it could include inviting and gifting an Elder or knowledge keeper to offer an opening prayer and to smudge the space.
So, how does offering a land acknowledgement move organizations and the broader public toward reconciliation? And, is this action more than just reconciliation lip service?

I remember last year when I took over this role somebody telling me how fast the year will go by. At the time I didn’t feel that way, there was so much to learn, so many things to do. Now that I am at the end of the term I reflect on this past year and they were right; this year did fly by!
