How I Tackled My CMP

By: MPI Toronto Chapter Board of Directors | Published by MPI Toronto Chapter | Apr 5, 2017

Having a CMP is now an industry standard for meeting professionals, both planners and suppliers. It elevates your professional stature and gives you a competitive edge in the job market. When I passed my CMP exam, it was an amazing feeling! I felt more confident and part of the events industry in a genuine way with credentials to show for it. Here is how I tackled mine.

My application
Before I could even apply, I had to get my requirements in order. Check out the CIC website to see all of the eligibility requirements.

How I got my CEU credits
I acquired my 25 CEUs from Incentive Works, MPI PD sessions, MPI webinars, and the Toronto Education Conference. This year’s conference is taking place May 7-9, 2017 at JW The Rosseau Muskoka. Attendees will have the opportunity to get up to 12 CEU credits (that’s nearly half of what you need total!) by attending TEC. Click here for more information and register for TEC today!

How I studied for my CMP Exam
Books: First, I purchased my books. This year there are three: 1) CIC Manual 9th Edition, 2) PCMA Book 6th Edition, and 3) APEX Glossary. (Available from the MPI Store)

Study Groups: Once I applied for my exam, I turned to MPI Toronto to help me with my studies by joining a CMP Study Group. It helped me learn the material, gave me structure while studying, and kept me accountable (we all know how hard it can be to stay motivated!) The 2017 CMP Study Groups dates are April 13, April 24, May 27, and June 11-12. Click here for more information

Practice Exams: When you are part of the study group, you will get practice exams, which is an important way to study if you are anything like me and need all the help you can get with multiple choice! You can also find practice exams on the CIC website and in the Pocket Prep App

Scholarships
Getting your CMP can be costly, and I was lucky enough to have financial help from my employer. But, did you know you could apply for a scholarship? Check out the scholarships that are available through MPI Toronto and MPI International.
