From Uncertain to All In: My MPI Volunteer Journey

By: Nicole Coon, CMP | Jun 13, 2025

I was on the fence.

I either needed to let my MPI membership lapse or renew and actually get involved. At the time, I worked on staff at an association, so I fully understood the value and benefits of volunteering. I also knew it could be a great way to meet more people in the industry and build meaningful connections.

So, I renewed that day—and submitted the volunteer interest form.

I was open to serving anywhere (Education, Marketing & Communications, Education) except Finance. Not because I didn’t value it, but because I had just finished a heavy budgeting cycle at work and couldn’t stomach more numbers. The Education team was the first to reach out, and I joined them.

I still remember my first committee call. I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t know what I was doing. I had only been to a couple of MPI events at that point—mainly to access the online classes while working toward my CMP. Everyone on the call seemed so polished and confident. I was completely lost.

But I wanted to contribute, so I volunteered to manage logistics for a monthly meeting. As a self-trained planner, I wasn’t sure if I was doing things the “right” way. I had so many questions: Who approves this? What’s the standard process? What do we usually do? But I figured it out—thanks to patient volunteers who answered all my questions and made space for me to learn. (And now, our committees are even better about offering tools, coaching, and support so anyone can succeed as a volunteer.)

That one step—saying yes—helped me start to meet people. I’d go to an MPI event and recognize someone from a call. I had people to talk to. It made MPI feel more personal, more welcoming, and more worthwhile.

Eventually, I volunteered to support our annual conference—thinking I’d be shadowing someone. Surprise! I ended up chairing it. For multiple years. And I loved it.

Then one day, Rania Hammad, the current Director of Education—who is just fantastic—asked if I’d consider joining the board. I’ve always been passionate about leadership, coaching, and helping others grow. Apparently, there had been a shift in plans for the current incoming Director of Education, and they needed someone to step in. So I said yes.

I won’t lie: the first six months felt like drinking from a firehose. But one thing our chapter does really well is support succession and mentor incoming leaders. I had the chance to shadow Rania during those first months and learn everything—building confidence, documenting processes, and encouraging other volunteers along the way.

After a year as Director, I stepped into the VP role. That gave me the chance to own more responsibilities and grow even further. I still didn’t know everything—but that was okay. I had the support of the other board members whenever I needed it.

At the board level, we’re not just planning events—we’re shaping the strategy and impact of our chapter. And it’s not stuffy or exclusive. It’s thoughtful, collaborative, fun, and energizing. I especially love our board retreats. We dig into plans for the year ahead, brainstorm, challenge each other, and dream big. I usually leave both mentally exhausted and incredibly excited. Somehow both drained and fired up.

At some point, someone asked if I’d ever consider going through the presidential track. And I thought—“Wow. That sounds amazing… and hard… and a lot of work.” But I went for it. And becoming Chapter President has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

Not everyone has the time or desire to go that route, and that’s completely okay. But for me, it was the next step in building leadership skills and making a real impact. Along the way, I’ve seen so much evolution. We’ve introduced new tools for volunteers, launched innovative programs, and constantly asked: “How can we serve our members better? How do we stay relevant and supportive?”

The reason I originally got involved was to maximize my membership—to meet more people and have more fun. And I’ve absolutely done that.

But I’ve also built deep friendships. Found incredible mentors. Had the chance to give back. And felt part of something bigger than myself.

Nice story, Nicole, you’re probably thinking by now—if you’re still reading.

But here’s the main point in sharing it: If I could go back, I would’ve volunteered sooner.

So if you’re not currently involved, I encourage you to consider it. You don’t have to commit to something huge. Start small—help greet people at a monthly meeting. Join a short-term project. Try a new skill, or stick to something you’re already great at. There’s something for every skill set and time commitment.

And if you are already volunteering—thank you. We truly couldn’t do this without you. Whether you read the newsletter, attend events when you can, or serve regularly—we appreciate you. And if you’re in a leadership role: thank you for growing others, stewarding our chapter, and supporting our industry. To everyone—thank you for being part of this amazing community.

For me, volunteering has led to professional connections, knowledge-sharing, incredible friendships—and some really meaningful memories. It’s also allowed me to be part of the change I wanted to see.

Since then, I’ve served on a global level and returned to the MPI Minnesota Board to fill a VP vacancy. The team was looking for someone with board experience to support Katy Billig, the incoming Director of Marketing and Communications. I was eager to say yes—but also wanted to understand how I could best help. I felt re-energized by the opportunity to contribute in a new way. Both times serving on the board have been valuable—it’s been incredible to see how the MPI Minnesota Chapter has evolved since I first served on the board.

I’m proud of how thoughtful our board has been about creating value for members, investing in the member experience, and helping each person feel like they belong.

Wherever you are in your MPI journey—just starting out, easing back in, or ready for your next challenge—I encourage you to think about what’s next in your MPI story. Maybe it’s attending your first event. Or attending more regularly. Maybe it’s volunteering, in a big or small way.

There’s so much to gain: new relationships, leadership growth, career support, and joy.

If you’re curious about volunteering, take a look at our committees and what they support—most opportunities align with one of those focus areas.

If you’re ready to jump in but aren’t sure where to start, we’re here to help.
